The First Protestant Church In Bali

GKPB (The Protestant Christian Church in Bali) was founded on November 11, 1931, when 12 Balinese people were baptized in the Yeh Poh River, located in Dalung Village, North Kuta District, Badung Regency, Bali. The baptism was led by Pastor R.A. Jaffry, assisted by Tsang To Hang. Among the 12 people baptized, 6 of them were from the Untal-Untal community (Tim Penulis Perjalanan Hidup Berjemaat, 2015).

In the early days, the Christian community in Untal-Untal held worship services and fellowship gatherings at the home of I Made Risin, where Tsang To Hang preached the Gospel (Tsang To Hang, 1979:41). However, I Made Risin himself did not get baptized on November 11, 1931, because his wife refused to convert to Christianity.

Eventually, I Made Risin separated from his wife, I Wayan Rempeh, and later married Ni Ketut Tangkid. He was finally baptized on December 30, 1932, in Wangaya. After that, a simple worship house (church) facing east was built in the yard of I Made Risin’s home, becoming the first church building in Untal-Untal (Tim Penulis Perjalanan Hidup Jemaat, 2015).
