The Historical Background of GKPB Betlehem Untal-Untal
The establishment of GKPB Betlehem Congregation Untal-Untal cannot be separated from the early evangelism efforts in Bali led by Tsang To Hang, a pioneering missionary from the Christian Foreign Missionary Union (CFMU). CFMU was the first evangelistic organization in China with a specific mission to reach foreign nations. It was founded in 1928 by Chinese Christian leaders under the knowledge of Dr. Leland Wang and operated under the leadership of Dr. Robert Alexander Jaffray, who was also a leader in the Christian and Missionary Alliance (CMA) (Tim Penulis Dinamika GKPB dalam Perjalanan Sejarah, 2012).
Tsang To Hang felt called and deeply moved to serve in Bali after hearing missionary journey reports from Rev. R.A. Jaffray, who had visited the Dutch East Indies twice (Tsang To Hang, 1979).
In February 1930, Tsang To Hang and his wife, as official missionaries sent by CFMU, departed from China and arrived in Makassar (Tsang To Hang, 1979:29). Rev. R.A. Jaffray, a CMA missionary from the United States, then brought them to Ampenan, Lombok, to study the Malay language in preparation for living and ministering in Bali (Tim Penulis Dinamika GKPB dalam Perjalanan Sejarah, 2012:130).
At that time, the Dutch East Indies government had not yet issued a permit to evangelize the local Balinese population. The existing permit only allowed evangelism among Chinese immigrants in Bali. However, with a permit later delivered by R.A. Jaffray, Tsang To Hang, his wife, their one-month-old son John Tsen, and Jaffray sailed to Bali in early January 1931 (Tim Penulis, 2012:130–131).
In Bali, Tsang To Hang was assisted by Ang Wei Cik and Gusti Made Rinda. Together, they traveled to Untal-Untal to share the Gospel at the home of I Made Risin, a close friend of Gusti Made Rinda. As people gathered, Tsang To Hang preached the Gospel in I Made Risin’s home, and this gathering became the first house fellowship in Bali (Tsang To Hang, 1979:41).
Eventually, 12 Balinese people boldly declared their faith in Jesus Christ and were baptized in the Yeh Poh River, Banjar Untal-Untal, on November 11, 1931, by R.A. Jaffray (Nyoman Wijaya, 2003:97).
Among these welve early believers, six were from Banjar Untal-Untal. These six became the pioneers and foundation of what would later become GKPB Betlehem Congregation Untal-Untal. The baptism event in Tukad Yeh Poh, Banjar Untal-Untal, Dalung Village, on November 11, 1931, is now recognized as the official founding date of GKPB Betlehem Congregation Untal-Untal, as well as the birth of the Protestant Christian Church in Bali (GKPB) (Tim Penulis Perjalanan Hidup Berjemaat GKPB Jemaat Betlehem Untal-Untal, 2015:14).
